Introduction

The Sea Environment Awareness (SEA) service enhances the maritime situation awareness making accessible daily ocean and atmospheric forecasts and indices for extreme sea condition.

The service visualizes hourly ocean forecast maps and atmospheric forecasts maps every 6 hours, showing:

  • significant wave height (m),
  • wave direction,
  • wave period (s),
  • sea surface currents (m/s),
  • sea surface temperature (C),
  • air temperature at 2 meter (C),
  • wind velocity at 10 meter (m/s)
  • visibility (m)

and computes field extreme conditions for users, in selected areas of interest, and within a time window of a daily 5 days forecast.

The service enables in mission planning and marine operations considering critical environmental condition information for safety of navigation and Search and Rescue operations at high temporal resolution and with extreme event conditions alerts.

The service is one of the results of MARISA research project.

Weather forecasts are based on observations and forecasts produced and certified by the Meteorological Service of the Italian Air Force (http://www.meteoam.it/).

Ocean products are produced by the E.U. Copernicus Marine Service Information (http://marine.copernicus.eu/)
