Ocean and Atmospheric datasets

The SEA service is connected to the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS) which provides regular and systematic reference information on the physical state and its variability for the global ocean and the European regional seas. In this section we provide a description of the physical forecast product NetCDF files that will be used in the Mediterranean and North Sea areas. NetCDF is a set of software libraries and self-describing, machine-independent data formats that support the creation, access, and sharing of array-oriented scientific data.

Ocean Forecast

Forecasts concerning the Mediterranean Sea are produced by the Mediterranenan Monitoring and Forecasting Center (Med-MFC) of CMEMS. The system is a coupled hydrodynamic-wave model implemented over the whole Mediterranean Basin, extending into the Atlantic in order to better resolve the exchanges at the Strait of Gibraltar. The model is implemented on a regular lat-lon grid with horizontal resolution of 1/24˚ (ca. 4.5 km) and has 141 unevenly spaced vertical levels. The hydrodynamics are supplied by the Nucleous for European Modelling of the Ocean (NEMO v3.6) while the wave component is provided by Wave Watch-III. The model solutions are corrected by a variational data assimilation scheme (3DVAR) of temperature and salinity vertical profiles and along track satellite Sea Level Anomaly observations.

Forecasts concerning the North Sea are produced by the North West Shelf (NWS) Monitoring and Forecasting Center (NWS-MFC) of CMEMS. The system is a coupled hydrodynamic-ecosystem model implemented in the NWS on a regular lat-lon grid with 1/15° latitudinal resolution and 1/9° longitudinal resolution (approximately 7 km2 grid cell). A hybrid s-sigma terrain following coordinate system with 51 levels is employed in order to retain vertical resolution on the shelf. Products are interpolated onto 24 geopotential ‘z’ levels based upon the ICES standard depths. The hydrodynamics is supplied by the Nucleus for European Modelling of the Ocean (NEMO v3.6) with the 3DVar NEMOVAR system used for the assimilation of sea surface temperature data. Forecast wave products are generated using the wave model WAVEWATCH III (v4.18).
