SEA Console

The SEA Presentation Console allows the operational user to set and show sea forecasts as an information layer superimposed on the map. On the menu bar click the ‘Data’ tab, then choose ‘Weather > ‘Sea Map (UNIBO) and select the physical variable of interest. The selected SEA Map layer will be added into the “Map layers” panel and the forecast map will be displayed on the map. By default, the physical variables displayed is the significant wave height.

By clicking on the pencil button, corresponding to the selected SEA Map layer, the Layer setting panel is displayed.

From this panel the user can set the values of:

  • forecast start date: it allows to see the present forecast or the historical forecasts of the last 10 days.
  • forecast time: depending on the selected “forecast start date”, the user can set the specific day and hour to be displayed.

At the very bottom of the toolbar, there is the timeseries and distribution buttons. By clicking the timeseries button, a panel opens at the bottom of the cartographic map…the forecast value for the selected forecast variable in that specific point (red cross marker) will be displayed in this panel.

By clicking the distribution button, a panel opens at the bottom of the cartographic map…the probability distribution of the number of events that occur in the 5 days-forecast period for the selected variable, in that specific point, will be displayed as a red bar chart…..the probability distribution of the number of events that occur in a long time period (10 year) for the selected variable, in that specific point, will be displayed as a gray bar chart. This distribution can be compared with the forecast distribution in order to forecast and evaluate the intensity and frequency of rare events that lie far in the tails of the distribution (i.e. events that occur few time in a year in a certain region).

The user can change the location of the red cross marker (i.e. the position of the forecast) by right-clicking on the map inside the region of interest.
